The Gulf of Georgia separates Vancouver Island from the mainland. The Strait of Juan de Fuca is to the south between Victoria and Washington's Olympic Peninsula.
 

Vancouver Island stretches along half the length of the coast line of British Columbia. The west coast is wide open to the Pacific Ocean. Salt Spring Island and the Southern Gulf Islands are in a relatively protected area just off the southeast end of Vancouver Island between Victoria and Nanaimo. Victoria is the capital of BC and Vancouver is BC's largest city.
