Sept. 3 2003

Alvaro Sanchez

Music lovers with a penchant for a Latin beat, will love the music planned for Music and Munch on Sept. 3rd.

The recital which launches the first of the fall and winter monthly series, features Alvaro Sanchez and Spanish guitar, with music from Argentina, Brazil and Cuba.

A resident of Salt Spring Island for many years, Sanchez was born in Buenos Aires and has played the music of his cultural heritage all his life. Although he has developed his skills in classical guitar repertoire under the tutelage of Lloyd English and Peter Taschuk, his love for the traditional music of South America shines through in performance.

His charming style and understated manner seem somehow to enhance the genre he loves. Wednesday's event will contain some old Brazilian songs with a rhythmic Bossa Nova beat, written by Antonio Jobim; more contemporary Brazilian music from the repertoire of Caetano Veloso who performed a few years ago at the Vancouver Jazz Festival; songs made popular by Argentinian Mercedes Sosa and a couple of Cuban melodies to complete the programme.

Patrons should note that Music and Munch continues on the first Wednesday of the month from October through May, with a New Year break on Jan 7th 2004.

All concerts are free and begin at 12:10 pm at All Saints' Church followed by a delicious, optional lunch for $5.50.
