Nina Holldorf - Soprano and Kimberley Elsser - Piano

The Music and Munch recital series has evolved not only as a showcase for established local and off island performers, but also as a friendly and receptive venue for new groups and solo artists.

One such new liaison is that of vocalist Nina Holldorf and pianist Kimberley Elsser, who found an instant rapport when they began working together this spring. They are excited to be performing together for the first time on Wednesday July 16th at Music and Munch.

Nina Holldorf is a seasoned vocalist with 15 years experience as a singer, teacher and composer. Born and raised in northern Germany, Holldorf spent her early years in vocal and musical studies under the tutelage of Yoshimitsu Haga in Hamburg, Germany. Her quality interpretation of German cabaret, musicals, jazz, blues and French chanson is a delight and her masterful ability to blend powerful vocals with musical sensitivity, render a strong stage presence.

Since moving to Salt Spring in 1998, the European-trained singer has graced several local venues with her dramatic style. In addition to teaching vocal workshops for children and adults for the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission, Holldorf recently opened a private studio where she welcomes new and ongoing students of all ages.

Accompanist Kimberley Elsser's claim to fame on Salt Spring Island is the birth of her son, Michael, on the Vesuvius ferry, eight years ago!

She is a microbiologist who has recently taken up organic farming and together with her family, runs Indigo Farm. Her busy, farming life does not stop her from playing piano and a couple of other instruments at the Pentecostal church, for Greenwoods and for the fun of it!

The two performers will be taking us "From Brecht to Broadway" in a programme that promises to be full of emotion. With songs by composers such as Bertold Brecht, Kurt Weill and Andrew Lloyd Webber, we are sure to leave humming some familiar tunes.

Free music begins at All Saints' by-the-Sea Church at 12.10pm followed by a delicious but optional lunch.
